*Police arrested the then bank manager who embezzled crores of rupees from the Urban Co-operative Bank through fraudulent activities*
*The accused, along with his accomplices, had obtained fraudulent loans worth crores of rupees from the bank on the basis of forged documents*
On 15-05-2026, the plaintiff, Rinku Gautam, currently Chief Branch Manager, Urban Co-operative Bank, Ltd., Cross Road, Dehradun, submitted a written complaint stating that a forensic audit conducted by the bank revealed serious financial irregularities in the bank’s accounting records and ledger entries from 2013 to 2016. During the investigation, it became clear that the then-Bank Manager, Mahabir Singh, in connivance with his associates, had committed fraudulent acts, forgery, and fraudulent entries in the bank, transferring funds to their personal accounts, causing losses of crores of rupees to the bank.
Based on the complaint, FIR No. 175/2026 was registered at Kotwali Nagar Police Station under sections 420, 467, 468, 471, 409, and 120B of the Indian Penal Code.
Given the sensitivity of the case, Senior Superintendent of Police, Dehradun, Pramendra Singh Dobal, initiated necessary evidence collection against the accused and directed their arrest. During the investigation, it came to light that the then-Bank Manager, Mahabir Singh, in connivance with his associates, had obtained a loan of ₹4.8 crore (₹48 million) from the bank on the basis of forged documents for the purchase of 20 JCB machines, embezzling the said amount. Based on evidence obtained during the investigation, the main accused in the fraud, Mahabir Singh, son of Dambar Singh (then branch manager), was arrested by the police on 10-06-2026. Investigation/evidence collection proceedings are underway against other accused involved in the case.
