Dehradun: The administration and Animal Husbandry Department have taken prompt action on a complaint filed by social activist and public interest advocate Bhupendra Kumar Laxmi at the Dehradun District Magistrate’s Public Grievance Redressal Day.
In his complaint, Bhupendra Kumar Laxmi raised the issue of inhumane treatment of chickens in the fish market area of Dehradun. The complaint stated that large numbers of chickens brought from other states are tied together and hung upside down, and weighed in that position, causing them immense pain. Photo and video evidence were also provided with the complaint.
Taking the complaint seriously, an investigation committee was formed under the chairmanship of Senior Veterinary Officer Dr. Varun Agarwal.
Senior Veterinary Officer, On June 5, 2026, under the chairmanship of *Dr. Varun Agarwal*, a team from the Veterinary Section of the Dehradun Municipal Corporation, along with *Dr. Tanusha*, Veterinary Officer of the Animal Husbandry Department, and *Kunal Grover*, a member of the SPCA, conducted a special campaign against animal cruelty in the municipal corporation area. The special campaign began at 6 a.m. on 5/6/2026 in the Tehsil Bazaar, Machhi Bazaar, Moti Bazaar, and Matawala Bagh areas.
During the inspection, numerous irregularities were discovered in the transportation and sale of chickens, including violations of animal welfare rules, overloading, unsanitary conditions in vehicles, and a lack of necessary documentation. As part of the action, three chicken-laden vehicles were seized, and the individuals involved were fined a total of ₹48,000. They were also strictly warned against future recurrence.
During the inspection, two vehicles were found to be operating in compliance with all standards and with the necessary documentation. were taking place.
Senior Veterinary Officer Dr. Varun Agarwal stated that cruelty to animals is unacceptable under any circumstances, and that a joint team of the Municipal Corporation and the Animal Husbandry Department will conduct regular weekly campaigns and take strict action in such cases.
This action once again proves that the administration responds sensitively to public interest issues raised by conscious citizens. The initiative of Bhupendra Kumar Lakshmi and the effective action taken under the leadership of Dr. Varun Agarwal are being considered important steps towards animal welfare.
