On the instructions of Senior Superintendent of Police Dehradun Ajay Singh, the police are continuously conducting intensive checking throughout the district. Under the above campaign, today on 04-12-25, during intensive checking being done by the police, a red colour KUV 100 vehicle was stopped and checked by the Raiwala police on the road leading to Rishikesh on the National Highway in front of the gate of Raiwala police station. Betabnath son of late Roshan Nath, resident of Kale Ki Dhal Sapera Basti, Rishikesh district Dehradun, age 35 years and his wife Barkha, wife of Betab Nath, resident of the above mentioned place were travelling in the vehicle. On checking the trunk of the vehicle, 14 small and big tortoises of protected species were recovered from it. On being questioned about them, the couple travelling in the car could not give any satisfactory answer nor could they show any valid documents related to them. The police arrested both the accused from the spot and a case was registered against them at the Raiwala police station under relevant sections. Upon rigorous interrogation, Betabnath revealed that he works as a scrap dealer and had purchased the turtles from a resident of Najibabad, and was smuggling them to his home in Kale Ki Dhal, Rishikesh. The accused were seeking to profit by selling the turtles to local buyers at high prices.
