The Government Nari Niketan, Balika Niketan, Bal Griha, and Shishu Sadan located in the Kedarpuram area of Dehradun may appear to be an ordinary complex from the outside, but stepping inside, one realizes that this place is not just a structure of bricks and mortar, but a vibrant effort to nurture broken trust, support shattered lives, and awaken the courage for new beginnings.

Every face here tells a story – some eyes reflect a lost childhood, some silence carries the sting of pain, and some smiles hold the hope of a new life. This is a safe haven where abandoned and destitute women and orphaned children not only find shelter but also the right to live with belonging, security, and respect. Every morning at Nari Niketan brings the assurance that light follows darkness and every life can be rebuilt.

Inspired by Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and the resolve of the Dehradun district administration, this complex has been transformed into a sensitive and secure place where women and children not only find refuge but also take steps towards self-respect and self-reliance. The mornings here begin not just with the sound of a bell, but with the belief that someone still cares for them. Regular health check-ups for girls and infants, balanced nutrition, timely treatment, a clean environment, and affectionate care—all these arrangements are acting as a balm on those invisible wounds that are difficult to describe in words.

Thanks to the continuous efforts of District Magistrate Savin Bansal, an additional 30-bed building for elderly women is almost ready. This building is not just a structure, but a haven of peace and dignity for those women who have been left alone in the twilight of their lives. Regular monitoring of the facilities at the shelter is being ensured so that no woman or child feels unsafe or neglected—because every life here is precious.

Under the leadership of the District Magistrate, the infrastructure at the shelter has been strengthened by securing a budget from the District Planning and Mineral Trust. The sewer line, dormitories, housing, sanitation, and other essential facilities have been expanded. Currently, 178 destitute, abandoned, and exploited women are residing in the Nari Niketan (women’s shelter) in Kedarpur. 21 girls are living in the Balika Niketan (girls’ shelter), and 23 children are living in the children’s home and infant care center, where they are being provided with special care for social security, education, shelter, and integration into the mainstream.

In the boys’ and girls’ shelters, children are being given academic education as well as computer training. The women at the Nari Niketan are being provided with livelihood-oriented training such as craft design, embroidery and knitting of woolen garments, and tailoring. Along with this, special attention is being paid to their mental and physical empowerment through music, musical instruments, and yoga training.

To ensure the all-round development of the girls in the Balika Niketan, a proper playground is being constructed, where they are receiving training in activities such as Kho-Kho, Kabaddi, Badminton, and Yoga. To further strengthen the security and health arrangements, on the instructions of the District Magistrate, two additional home guards and two additional nurses have been deployed, and regular visits by doctors have been ensured. Numerous development and strengthening works have been carried out at Nari Niketan, Balika Niketan, and Shishu Sadan, including the construction of toilets and bathrooms, dining areas, grilling of the temple complex, leveling of the gym and experimental areas, roof repairs, installation of cupboards, laundry room, kitchen and building maintenance, and inverter installation. Adequate blankets, beds, and double mattresses have been provided for the children so that they can live in a safe and comfortable environment.

During an inspection conducted last December by District Magistrate Savin Bansal, he emphasized the importance of these institutions and assured that all the needs of Nari Niketan, Balika Niketan, Bal Griha, and Shishu Sadan would be fulfilled on a priority basis. Today, the results of his commitment are clearly visible on the ground.

Thanks to the sensitivity of the government and the administration, schemes are moving from paper to reality and transforming lives. The meaning of development is truly fulfilled only when the most vulnerable sections of society receive respect and support. This institution in Kedarpuram is not just an institution, but a story of hope – a story of new beginnings and a story of the enduring spirit of humanity.
