Dehradun, 14 June 2025: Sahastradhara, located near Rajpur village, just 15-16 km from Dehradun, the capital of Uttarakhand, is famous in the country and abroad for its sulphur-rich water (sulphur springs). This natural water source is not only a center of attraction for tourists, but its medicinal properties are considered beneficial in the treatment of skin diseases like itching, heat rash and rashes etc. However, due to increasing tourism and exploitation of natural water sources, the need to preserve this precious heritage is being emphasized.

*Medicinal importance and beliefs*

According to Ayurveda experts, the sulphur-rich water of Sahastradhara comes out of limestone rocks, which contain natural amount of sulphur. Bathing in this water provides relief from skin problems. Local people believe that this water can also be helpful in diseases like polio, although it needs scientific confirmation.

 *Challenges of Environment and Conservation*

The Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology has given geo-heritage status to Sahastradhara, as the limestone caves here provide information about the climate thousands of years ago. However, the problem of drying up and overexploitation of water sources is increasing in Dehradun. Experts say that the size of the sulphur source of Sahastradhara is getting smaller, which requires immediate conservation measures.

Demand in public interest*

Local residents and environmentalists have demanded the government to take concrete steps to maintain the purity and source of the sulphur water of Sahastradhara. The following suggestions have been given for this:

Uncontrolled tourism should be banned around the sulphur source.

Afforestation and water conservation schemes should be started to recharge the water sources.

Special campaigns should be run for regular checking of water purity and conservation of caves.

 *Precautions for tourists*

Tourists are advised to be careful while bathing in the sulphur water, as the rocks can be slippery and the water can be deep. Also, this water is not potable, as the purity of the source may be affected.

The sulphur water of Sahastradhara is not only beneficial for health, but it is also a part of the natural and cultural heritage of Uttarakhand.
